Addiction Treatment Solutions for the Entire Family

Family Therapy At A Drug Rehab

Addiction is a chronic, debilitating disease that changes people in ways that are often difficult for family members to reconcile. Alcohol and drugs have significant, adverse effects on the brain and body. Those who struggle with addiction sometimes say and do things that inflict trauma on those they love the most. Family and friends often (although unwillingly) watch their loved one transform and change in ways that they do not recognize. Because of this, family members can usually benefit from family therapy and support groups.

Here at Evolve Indy, we take a unique approach to drug & alcohol addiction treatment in Indiana and focus on healing the entire family unit. Get in touch with our program today to learn more about how we can help.

How Does Addiction Affect the Family?

Two of the most common ways that substance addiction affects the family is financially and loss of relationships impacted by addiction. Young, old, close, or distant, virtually any member of an addict’s circle can be (and often are) adversely affected by addiction.  Family members, friends, co-workers, and community members all watch as their loved one changes. Trust is frequently compromised as moods and behaviors change. Arguments and hostility typically become a standard element of communication. Family members often search for ways to cope with the unpredictable behavior of their loved ones. These coping mechanisms sometimes turn into codependency symptoms, and all too often, family members fail to realize they are actually enabling their loved one’s self-destructive behavior in an effort to try and help them.

Substance use and addiction are incredibly costly. Depending on the severity of your addiction, drug use can cost anywhere from one hundred to several thousand dollars a month, depending on what you use, how often you use, and where you live. Addictions to alcohol are no different. Depending on the amount you drink and the alcohol of choice, alcohol addiction can be financially detrimental to maintain. But how does this hurt your family? Unfortunately, when liquid resources run out, and someone is struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction, they may begin to turn to their family for financial support. In some cases, if the family no longer voluntarily supports the addict by giving them money or even helping them obtain drugs or alcohol, the addict may turn towards theft to get the funds necessary to purchase drugs or alcohol. In addition, family members who may be desperate to help their addicted loved one seek addiction treatment may drain much needed financial resources such as savings accounts, retirement accounts, or even mortgaged their home to raise funds required to pay for rehab.

The Benefits of Family Therapy in Addiction Treatment

For a family with a loved one struggling from substance abuse, loneliness is a common emotion. In some cases, loneliness is coupled with anger and depression. This anger can be directed at the individual struggling with addiction, but it can also be internal. Family members can be angry at themselves because they feel as though they have failed as a parent or spouse in their efforts to help their loved one defeat their addictions. Family therapy in addiction treatment helps family members find the support that is essential to understanding their loved one substance use disorder, along with easing anxiety and frustrations. When family members attend therapy or family support groups, it inevitably has a positive benefit on the family as a whole. Family therapy can help the family heal and increase the chances that their loved one will seek help for their addiction and maintain long term sobriety.

The mission of family therapy is to provide individuals and families with support and education on the disease of addiction, cross-addiction, and the impact on the family system. Our addiction and substance abuse family therapy program is designed to assess your family’s needs, educate you about chemical dependence, and offer ongoing family support during and/or after the patient’s substance abuse treatment.

The disease of addiction has significant physical, emotional, and social consequences for the individual seeking addiction treatment and for the family and significant others who have been impacted by the disease. We view the family as an essential component of a patient’s ongoing recovery program and seek to involve family members in the addiction treatment and recovery process.

What to Expect at Evolve Indy's Family Program in Indiana

Individual addiction treatment focuses on one person’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Family therapy, on the other hand, focuses on the relationships of the entire family. During therapy, a family therapist will explore with the family members how the cycle of substance use has impacted the family. I don’t even know where to begin. Addiction doesn’t care what family or person it chooses to effect and it’s definitely a long and tough journey not only for the addict but also for the loved ones included. My first call was to Marty and he immediately arranged a force to go and talk to my son. Guided me in the process and made it easy during a rough time in our lives. Tyson took time away to welcome my son to the Evolve house at midnight bc it was the only flight we could get him back due to Covid and he welcomed my son and never once looked upset that it was late and helped him get set up and took time from his personal life to do that for us. Whitney whose a amazing counselor and my son loved her. There is a millions things and examples of what each of them did to help take care of my son through the process but when you walk into Evolve you feel calm, like family and mostly loved. When you meet Joe you just immediately feel his genuineness and his heart for everyone. My son loved him and his choice of music 😂 Mike Reynolds who also was amazing to my son and I can’t thank him enough. But mostly my biggest thanks and appreciation goes to Brian Kendrick. For multiple reasons, when my son left Evolve and was in sober living he still took my son under his wing and treated him like his own. When we went through relapse he contacted each of us on the daily.
