Intensive Outpatient Care In Indiana
An intensive outpatient program (IOP) is typically the next step after completing a partial hospitalization program (PHP). It is significantly different from a residential program or inpatient program, which is a type of facility similar to a hospital setting. At an intensive outpatient program, clients have more freedom to resume daily life while progressing through addiction treatment.
In some cases, it may be necessary to complete an inpatient addiction treatment program before “stepping down” to an intensive outpatient program. In others, it may be appropriate to begin at this level of treatment, depending on individual needs. Our Director of Admissions will work closely with prospective clients and their families to determine the appropriate course of treatment before admission.

Inpatient vs. Outpatient: Which Addiction Treatment is Right?
Where other differences exist, the most significant difference between inpatient residential addiction treatment and outpatient treatment is that inpatient programs require you to remain on-site at the facility throughout the course of your treatment program. Residential or inpatient treatment programs often provide various treatment options, services, and amenities that intensive outpatient programs do not. Because patients are required to live at the facility during their treatment, inpatient programs provide housing, meals, medical care, nutritional services, and recreational opportunities for you to take advantage of during your treatment.
Inpatient programs are typically considered a “better fit” if you are struggling with a severe addiction or if you have completed addiction treatment before and have experienced a relapse. To increase the chances of treatment success, you may find inpatient treatment more beneficial as it removes the temptations associated with drugs or alcohol. Inpatient programs are also a suitable option if one’s home environment does not support achieving sobriety. For example, if your home or community exposes you to triggers and instability, or if you struggle with a co-occurring mental health condition, inpatient treatment may be a better, more sustainable option.
Each type of treatment program has its unique pros and cons, and therefore, the option that best suits each individual will differ. Inpatient programs provide 24/7 medical monitoring, mental health services, and nutritional support. Inpatient programs can be more expensive than outpatient programs and, due to their residential nature, require extended time away from family and loved ones.
Intensive outpatient programs allow patients to remain at home while receiving treatment. Outpatient programs in Indiana are generally less expensive than inpatient programs and provide increased flexibility in treatment scheduling. The biggest challenge you may face when choosing intensive outpatient treatment is the fact that you remain at home throughout treatment. For some, this ongoing exposure to the triggers and situations that led to and furthered addiction may contribute to relapse.
What to Look for in a Quality Residential Care Facility
Choosing the right residential care facility is an important step in the recovery process. A quality program should provide more than just a place to stay—it should offer comprehensive, compassionate care tailored to your unique needs. When evaluating potential facilities, look for the following key features:
- Accreditation and licensing to ensure the facility meets state and national standards for care
- Qualified staff, including licensed therapists, medical professionals, and addiction specialists
- Individualized treatment plans that address both substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions
- Evidence-based therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and trauma-informed care
- 24/7 supervision and support to ensure safety and consistent care
- Family involvement and education to strengthen support systems and promote healing at home
- Aftercare planning to help clients transition successfully after residential treatment
- Clean, comfortable, and supportive living environment that promotes wellness and stability
By choosing a residential care facility that prioritizes these elements, you’re setting yourself—or your loved one—up for a more effective, lasting recovery.

PREPARING FOR TREATMENT
Understanding Intensive Outpatient Drug Treatment in Indianapolis
Intensive outpatient addiction treatment is often advised if you have a “mild” addiction, minimal mental health concerns, and a safe, stable support structure at home. One of the primary elements of intensive outpatient treatment is group therapy. Participation in a group treatment setting allows you to give and receive support from your peers, improve communication skills and, through interaction with peers, learn how to be in a social environment without using drugs or alcohol. Intensive outpatient programs help you learn essential coping skills necessary to maintain recovery after treatment ends. Some programs also assist with housing and employment while helping you develop a support system and improve problem-solving and coping skills. If you require detox services, an intensive outpatient program might not suit you as many intensive outpatient programs do not offer detox services.

What to Expect at an Intensive Outpatient Program
Intensive outpatient programs use many of the same treatment models used in inpatient residential addiction treatment settings. These evidence-based therapy models can help you achieve sobriety and maintain long-term recovery.
The most common therapy models used in intensive programs include cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT and other similar therapeutic models. Some programs also incorporate 12-step programs into their treatment models.
Our IOP Program in Indianapolis, Indiana
At Evolve Indy, the first step in our intensive outpatient program is a comprehensive medical and mental health evaluation. This process helps you work together with a therapist to create an individualized addiction treatment plan based on your needs. This plan will also help establish how many days you will attend treatment and how long your intensive outpatient program will last.
Evolve Indy offers intensive outpatient treatment both with or without community housing.
Should you decide to reside in community housing, you will share a sober home with other peers who participate in our treatment program. Evolve Indy offers transportation on a daily basis where clinical services are offered. This helps ensure sobriety because clients will have the accountability necessary during early recovery while also having the freedom to facilitate the transition back into life. Evolve Indy also works alongside an affiliated Sober Living Community should you choose this course of treatment. Our intensive outpatient program offers group therapy sessions six days per week to accommodate those who are employed or have other responsibilities. Over the course of the week, clients will participate in 15-25 hours of group therapy including one hour of individual therapy. Similar to a partial hospitalization program, we provide a variety of therapeutic services ranging from behavioral therapy to relapse prevention.
